Illumination ,

October is internationally recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and once again this year, Women’s Cancer Initiative Tata Memorial Hospital, The Estée Lauder Companies, ELLE magazine and The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, joined hands to promote awareness for breast cancer in India.

The Estée Lauder Companies launched its Global Landmarks Illumination Initiative in the year 2000 and since then, hundreds of well-known landmarks around the world have been illuminated with pink lights every October to raise awareness and inspire action.

The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, was illuminated as part of this global initiative on 19th of October, 2011. Guest of honour, Poonam Sinha, released hundreds of pink ribbon balloons into the sky as a symbolic gesture. Guests arrived to the spectacular sight of the historic structure bathed in pink. The pink tower represents the pink ribbon, the universal symbol of breast health and the fight against breast cancer. The message to the city: Save a life – yours. A simple self-examination every month is all it takes to detect breast cancer; and an early detection is the simplest cure.
